Chapter 18
D avid spun around to find the Postman striding in their direction. Willy’s awkward lope reminded Sean of some creature out of a science fiction movie. David’s eyes shot to the various bystanders in their vicinity, obviously checking to see if anyone recognized the name Willy had just hollered out.
David gave Willy a forceful “Shhhh!” before gripping his arm and steering him away from the crowded street. Sean followed the two of them as they wound their way between several tables. One of the vendors shot them a warning look when Willy bumped into one of the tables, knocking over a display of colorful handkerchiefs. Sean just smiled and shrugged apologetically at the vendor as he tried to keep up with the other two. The vendor quickly stood up from his chair and followed them as they walked past his old Chevy Astro van. He eyed them suspiciously, making sure they didn’t sneak into his vehicle and steal any of his goods. Sean watched as Willy tried to pull his arm away, but David’s grasp held firm. They worked their way down one of Tionesta’s short side streets. When it dead-ended at the river, David looked around the empty roads before moving them down into the high weeds of the embankment and to the river’s edge.
“You can’t use my name here, Willy!” David said forcibly, releasing Willy’s arm .
“Sorry about that, ahhh...,” Willy apologized, uncertain what name to use.
“It’s just David now.”
“Okay.” Willy didn’t say anything else, but he gave David a questioning nod in Sean’s direction.
“It’s alright. Sean knows everything.”
“Yes,” Willy said, looking Sean up and down before cocking his head to the side and commenting. “It seems Sean here knows a little bit of everything about everyone.”
Sean wasn’t quite sure how to respond to the odd comment. He was saved from making a generic response when Willy quickly turned his attention back to David. “I began to worry for my old friend after my last visit to Kane. Nobody knew where you’d gone and the new mayor wouldn’t give me any information on your whereabouts.”
“Good,” David said, relieved that his secret was being kept.
“Not for me,” Willy said with a snort. “I’ve got more information that I’d like to get out there,” he said as he flung his arms wide, gesturing to the world at large, “and my megaphone has disappeared.”
“Well, now you’ve found it,” David said with a small smile, starting to relax.
“You still hidin’ from the Boogey Man?” Willy asked pointedly.
David shook his head. “The Boogey Man is dead. But yes, I’m still in hiding. I don’t think The Boss will ever stop looking for me until he has my head on a pike adorning his office at the White House.” Most people wouldn’t have understood whom David meant, but Sean was very familiar with David’s code words. The Boogey Man was the term David used to refer to Lt. Jenkins, who had led the Ranger team to assassinate him four months earlier. The Boss was the name he used in his broadcasts for General Oates.
